Rolex or Tudor: which is right for you?

Rolex GMT-Master II with green and black bezel

Both brands were founded by Hans Wilsdorf and share a reputation for robust, everyday watches. They are not the same thing, and the right choice depends on what you want from the watch.

I.A shared history

Hans Wilsdorf founded Rolex and later created Tudor to offer Rolex-level reliability at a more accessible price. For decades Tudor used Rolex cases and bracelets with outsourced movements.

Today Tudor stands on its own, with its own designs and, in many models, its own manufacture movements.

II.Design and character

Rolex refines a small set of icons slowly over decades: the Submariner, GMT-Master II, Datejust, Daytona and Explorer. Finishing is exceptionally consistent.

Tudor takes more liberties. The Black Bay and Pelagos draw on vintage dive watches with snowflake hands, bold colors and fabric straps, and the brand tends to experiment more freely.

III.Price and availability

A pre-owned Tudor often costs a fraction of a comparable Rolex. That makes it a strong first luxury watch, or a daily wearer alongside something more precious.

Rolex prices on the pre-owned market move with demand. Popular steel sports models can trade above retail, while dress models and older references are often easier to find.

IV.Value over time

Rolex has historically held value better than almost any other brand, particularly complete sets in good condition.

Tudor values are steadier and lower, but you buy in for much less. If resale is a priority, condition and completeness matter for both.

V.How to choose

Choose Rolex if you want a lifetime watch with the strongest name recognition and resale. Choose Tudor if you want character, robust build quality and more watch for the money.

Either way, buy the watch, not just the logo: check condition, service history and paperwork. Every Roam watch is timegrapher checked and represented honestly, so you know exactly what you are getting.
